From exploring the most iconic landmarks to embracing Finland’s famous sauna culture, these must-do activities will help you make the most of your trip to Helsinki.
Experience the Finnish Sauna Culture
Saunas are an essential part of Finnish life, and no trip to the country is complete without experiencing one for yourself. For a modern and stylish Sauna, head to Löyly. Right by the sea, this stunning complex is perfect if you want to cool off in the Baltic after your hot and steamy session. If you want something a little more traditional, Kotiharjun Sauna in the Kallio district offers a classic wood-heated experience, giving you an authentic taste of local culture.
Relax at Hietaranta Beach
This stop wasn’t on our initial itinerary, but having excellent weather during our stay we decided to head over to the Töölö district to soak up the sun and experience the laid-back side of Helsinki. Even though the city might not be the first place that comes to mind for a beach day, Hietaranta Beach is a summer hotspot. Even if you visit Helsinki outside of summer, the sand and the nearby coastal trails provide a beautiful spot for a scenic walk.

Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral

Uspenski Cathedral

Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral
Senate Square was the first place we visited in Helsinki as it’s easily accessible by the city’s tram system. Being the heart of Helsinki’s historic district, Senate Square is one of the most iconic places in the city. Surrounded by beautiful buildings, the square is dominated by the stunning Helsinki Cathedral, one of Finland’s well-known landmarks. Close to the square you’ll also find the South Harbour the Uspenski Cathedral, making it a must-visit for every traveler.

Whether you want to dive into even more Finnish history, explore beautiful nature outside of Helsinki, or experience a different side of the country, these day trips offer something for everyone.

Island Day Trip – Suomenlinna Fortress
There are plenty of islands to choose from if you want to get away from the mainland of Helsinki. A short 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square takes you to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one the most important landmarks in Finland’s history. This sea fortress spans several islands and offers stunning coastal views, underground tunnels, and museums. We absolutely loved this part of our trip – walking around the cute islands, exploring its hidden paths, and soaking in the seaside views was a perfect way to spend a day. If you don’t want to pack your own lunch, Suomenlinna also features a few cozy cafés and picnic spots to take a break and relax.

Day Trip by Train – Turku
Since we flew into Turku for our trip, we made sure to explore Finland’s oldest city before heading over to Helsinki. Just two hours by train, Finlands former capital city is packed with history and culture. The Turku Castle, dating back to the 13th century, and the impressive Turku Cathedral are must-see attractions for history lovers. The city also offers a vibrant riverside area with great restaurants and bars, perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll.

International Day Trip – Tallinn
You might think that it can’t be that easy to cross the Baltic Sea into Estonia, but it’s surprisingly easy. Just a 2-hour ferry ride will take you from Helsinki to Tallinn. Once you arrive, you will step into a fairy-tale medieval town, complete with cobblestone streets, stunning churches, and colorful old buildings. The Tallinn Old Town, another UNESCO-listed site, is perfect for exploring on foot. Highlights like the Toompea Castle, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the Town Hall Square make this trip worthwhile. If you have even more time on your hands, Tallinn is also the perfect starting point to extend your trip through the Baltic States, with easy connections to Riga (Latvia) and Vilnius (Lithuania).
